Election 2006

I'm struggling to survive Election Night 2006.  As I switch from channel-to-channel to get different perspectives I get my local coverage from the local stations, and Fox News is keeping up a professional air calling the races one-by-one as the Democrats gain seats in both houses.  Then I switch to CNN.  They're giggling.  Then later, a shot of Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid, and they're giggling.  And I start to wonder, who else in the world is giggling right now?

I think the French are giggling.  The Iranians ... giggling.  Hugo Chavez is laughing out loud.  The Hollywood left is giggling.  Clearly, according to all of the polls and all of the pundits, if you oppose the war in Iraq, you're probably giggling right now.  But here's the awful irony ... Our troops in Iraq have never been in this much danger.  If you wanted the war to end soon, you just blew it!

Who's really giggling right now are the insurgent leaders in Iraq.  Tomorrow's headlines will be read out loud in all of the caves of Afghanistan, and in every terrorist hideout in Iraq.  Their troops will all cheer.  They know, now, that what Osama bin laden said so many years ago about America's lack of willpower has finally come true.  They will be told that victory is at hand and a bloodbath must begin.  They will be told, Allah has indeed smiled upon thier efforts this day.  The Americans will be leaving soon, because the Americans have voted in a change, because the Americans have lost their will to complete the task at hand.

Yesterday, Iraq belonged to the Iraqi government.  Tomorrow, Iraq will belong to the lawless ones who kill innocents.  Those brave souls in Iraq who stood with us know that their lives are once again in danger.  Their families will be threatened if they are seen supporting the Americans in any measure.  The good people in Iraq will once again be forced to hide away and hope the angry ones will pass by their door.  Will be forced to pray that the violent ones will choose to visit their neighbor's household and not thier own.

I ask all of you out there who voted (D) tonight, how is any leader supposed to negotiate a peaceful transition of power to the Iraqi government, when any fool knows that all America wants is to bug out?  You've doomed us!  The insurgents are about to conduct a full-on offensive.  And why not?  They know we are not there to win.

They may have been depressed, disheartened, short on supplies, none of that matters now.  They've won.

The good news is that once they've claimed this victory, they'll all go back to their front porch rocking chairs and relax, just like they did in the Somalia.  Isn't that how it was?  They laid down thier arms and fed all of their people and peace ruled Mogadishu for years afterwards.  And they forgot all about us and left us alone to live our lives, and conduct our businesses in peace.  Right?  That's the lesson we learned from Blackhawk Down, isn't it?

Don't make me giggle.
